Wilderness Christians – Actions In The Wilderness Part 1

The children of Israel did many incredible things in the wilderness.  It truly is very shocking.

All their actions can be summed up in the book of Deuteronomy 12:7-11 “And there ye shall eat before the Lord your God, and ye shall rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the Lord thy God hath blessed thee.  Ye shall not do after all the things that we do hear this day, EVERY MAN WHATSOEVER IS RIGHT IN HIS OWN EYES.  For ye are not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance, which the Lord your God giveth you.  But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the Lord your God giveth you to inherit, and when He giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety; then there shall be a place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause His Name to dwell in….”

They all did”‘whatever was right in their own eyes.”

Is this heresy or not?  Should not it have been they all did whatever was right in GOD’s eyes?  Whenever people do whatever is right according to their own views, they are inviting all demons from hell to have a party, an open door to an open house.  The Word of God is cast aside and no longer used as the standard of truth.  Now all truth is relative.  Everything goes as long as it is right in their eyes.  This is so prevalent in America today.  Yet, what is even sadder is this concept is so accepted and embraced in the Christian churches.  This is extremely dangerous when Christians accept (in their own eyes) what God calls sin.  The Israelites offer excellent examples of this concept.  Yet, the Christian church has not yet learned this and, in fact, has only made it worse.  It is worse because Christians know the Truth Himself – Christ.

The first obvious example is the results of the experience of the golden calf.  Pause a moment and reflect in your heart on the Lord’s revelation regarding the golden calf.  Pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal God’s words through my words.  Absorb them.

This story of the golden calf is critical for the believer to understand for his own walk.  Remember the Israelites were in the wilderness at Mount Horeb, the mountain of God.  It had not been too long since they left Egypt.  Moses was summoned up the mountain alone to be with the Lord.

Just read and absorb what the people did.  In fact, just prior to the golden calf and Moses affirming the covenant by the sprinkling of blood, read how dedicated and grateful the people were to the Lord for their salvation.  Exodus 24:7 – “And he (Moses) took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and THEY SAID, ALL THAT THE LORD HATH SAID WE WILL DO, AND BE OBEDIENT”.  Immediately, after this vow, they built and worshipped the golden calf.  Permit the Holy Spirit to reveal the deeper meanings of the Lord in these Scriptures.

Exodus 32:1-6 – “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.  And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, and bring them unto me…   And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.  And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he made it a MOLTEN (GOLDEN) CALF; and they said, THESE BE THY GODS, O ISRAEL, WHICH BROUGHT THEE UP OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT.  And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.  And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.  After he made it a MOLTEN (GOLDEN) CALF; and they said, THESE BE THY GODS, O ISRAEL, WHICH BROUGHT THEE UP OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT”.

Brethren, have you really absorbed what they did and said?  They remarked – “a golden calf is the god that delivered them from the bondage of Egypt.”  Did they really say this?  What ever happened to our dear Lord?  Well they sure believed it because they sat down and partied in pagan revelry.

Even look at Aaron, the high priest and top aide of Moses.  He proclaimed “Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.”  Look at this clearly – a church leader has openly rejected God and His Word and participated in this pagan revelry.

How many golden calves have you created in your Christian walk?  No wonder God made the earth swallow them up.  God is a very jealous god; He strongly desires intimate relationship and fellowship with us.  Have you given credit to your own golden calf when it was really God who deserves the credit?

Look at your life and compare it to Israel.  Are you partying in the flesh, openly defying and despising God and His Word?  You purposely engage in your sin and then have the audacity to justify it.  You certainly do what is right in your own eyes – definitely not what is right in God’s eyes.  You know the Truth of His Word; yet, you openly reject it.

The choice is yours.  Permit the Holy Spirit to show and convince you.  God loves you so dearly.  He only desires true repentance and receiving you back with open arms like the father and the prodigal son.  Brethren, as long as you do “what is right in your own eyes,” and not yield your life and direction to the indwelling, resurrected Christ, you will always remain in the wilderness surrounded by your own golden calves.
